CIP – Composite Bearing Materials

Columbia Industrial Products

Columbia Industrial Products (CIP) was founded in 1998 by Stephen Phillips in Eugene, Oregon, USA. CIP is a manufacturer and global supplier of custom composite bearing materials focused on high-strength, low-friction textile reinforced composites.

CIP bearings are laminated polymer materials made by impregnating textiles with thermoset resins and solid lubricants. The resulting material is self-lubricating — requiring no external grease or oil — and performs exceptionally in wet and submerged conditions.

Nvirotech is CIP's authorised distributor in India, providing local engineering support, custom fabrication, and fast delivery to Indian customers.

Composite Material Technology

CIP uses a unique three-digit material coding system based on the combination of textile, lubricant, and resin used in each grade.

Material Coding System

The Three-Digit Code

Each CIP material is identified by a three-digit code — the first digit identifies the textile (e.g., cotton, glass, carbon, aramid), the second the solid lubricant (e.g., PTFE, graphite, MoS₂), and the third the thermoset resin system used.

This coding system allows engineers to precisely specify material properties — including load capacity, friction coefficient, temperature resistance, and chemical compatibility — for any given application.

Textile Reinforcement

Cotton, woven glass, carbon fibre, and aramid textiles provide the structural backbone, giving CIP composites exceptional compressive strength and dimensional stability.

Solid Lubricants

PTFE, graphite, and molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂) solid lubricants are impregnated throughout, eliminating the need for any external lubrication — even underwater.

Thermoset Resins

Phenolic and epoxy thermoset resin systems bond the composite for high-temperature resistance, chemical resistance, and long service life in demanding environments.

Where CIP Bearings Are Used

CIP Hydro – Hydroelectric Power

Lock gate bearings

Lock Gate Bearings

CIP composite bearings are ideal for lock gate and navigation structure pivots that operate in submerged conditions without access for lubrication.

Vertical turbine pump bearings

Vertical Turbine Pump Bearings

Water-lubricated CIP shaft bearings for deep-well vertical turbine pumps, replacing traditional grease-lubricated bronze bearings.

Wicket gate bearings

Wicket Gate Bearings

CIP trunnion and gate bearings for hydroelectric turbine wicket gates, designed for minimal friction and maximum service life in water.

CIP Marine – Propulsion & Steering

Marine stern tube bearings

Stern Tube & Propeller Shaft Bearings

Water-lubricated CIP stern tube bearings replace traditional oil-lubricated systems, eliminating oil contamination risk in sensitive marine environments.

Rudder bearings

Rudder Bearings & Steering Systems

CIP composite rudder pintle and gudgeon bearings for boats, ships, and naval vessels requiring corrosion-resistant, maintenance-free bearing solutions.

General Industrial Products

Bearings & Wear Rings

Custom flanged, straight, and split bearings and wear rings for a wide range of industrial machinery.

Spherical Bearings

Self-aligning CIP spherical bearings for applications with misalignment, vibration, or angular displacement.

Thrust Washers

CIP thrust washers for axial load applications in hydraulic, pump, and gearbox systems.

Custom Components

Engineered to your drawing – CIP bearings are custom machined to any size, shape, or specification.
